About Wellesley Styx

During Fall 2017, Wellesley Scoops FHC started Wellesley Styx, a try-out based club program open to experienced field hockey players entering grades 5th through 7th who were enrolled in the Scoops Fall 2017 session.

The goal of the Wellesley Styx Club Program is to provide age-appropriate training with high quality coaching for those players wishing to improve their skills in a competitive but fun environment.  We will continue to develop the basic hockey skills introduced in our Scoops program in a more competitive atmosphere.  Training will include individual skill work as well as introduction to basic tactical knowledge of the game such as spatial awareness for an individual and in team play.

Wellesley Styx had 20 players during Fall 2017. Players were chosen based on skill level and physical and emotional readiness. Meghan Peterson, assistant coach of the Wellesley College field hockey team, in addition to Nancy Sweatt, former college and HS field hockey coach, and also assisted by Caroline Guild, a former Wellesley College field hockey player and student athlete coach to our Scoops players.

Time Commitment:

The season ran from September 10th to November 5th.  Practices were held on Sunday afternoons from 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm, just after the already scheduled Scoops practice.  Each session combines individual skill work, small team/tactical play and scrimmage format games.

The Fall 2017 schedule proved competitive and challenged our young players with 8 amazing games of field hockey against experienced opponents such as Dana Hall School, Charles River School, Cohasset FHC, Scituate's True Grit FHC, Winchester FHC and Boston FHC.

The Fall 2018 schedule was largely consistent with the prior year.  Additionally, in the Spring 2019, Wellesley Styx players were able to play in a few local tournaments.  Both the U12 and U14 teams enjoyed a ton of improvement, much success and loads of fun!

We understand that the girls have many school, sporting and family commitments.  Wellesley Styx are for girls who love field hockey and are looking to prioritize attendance to the extent possible.  We expect our players to be committed and to make every attempt to make all practices as well as participate in scheduled games.  The players who succeed in our program recognize that their skill and athletic development is directly proportionate to the amount of time they practice and play.  For those players who cannot make this commitment, the Scoops fundamentals program is an excellent alternative.

Fall 2019:

Unfortunately, Julia King resigned from Wellesley College and could not commit to running Wellesley Styx.  Since Wellesley Scoops started Wellesley Styx and serves as advisory role, we decided to keep Wellesley Styx running in a limited capacity (for the U14 team).

This Fall, Elizabeth Kaplan has volunteered her time to spearhead this effort.  Therefore, last year's U14 team was offered spots on this Fall's roster.  Coach Nancy Sweatt has agreed to continue to coach our players.  Games have been scheduled!

Practices are held at Wellesley College Turf Field on Sunday afternoons 3:00 - 4:15 pm.

Game Schedule:

Games are held on Saturday mornings.  Home games are held at Wellesley College Turf Field.

Winter 2019-2020:

The program will be an indoor field hockey clinic.  We will work on some skills, but mostly play games and learn through game play.   We will use modified sticks and soft hockey balls.  All players should bring shin guards, mouth guards, and goggles.  This clinic will be coached by experienced player, coach and umpire, Dr. Michael Bessette.

Coach Bessette was on the 1985-86 US National Development Team.  Coach Bessette and his family recently moved to Wellesley from Chatham, NJ.  While in NJ, he was the Chatham Recreation Coach, President of the Chatham Field Hockey Club, Board member of Mid Jersey Youth Field Hockey and owner of Turf City in Wayne, NJ.  He was a travel coach for the Rapid Fire Elite club program in NJ as well.  Coach Bessette is a USA Field Hockey Level 2 Certified Coach.  He specializes in body mechanics and techniques and is a welcomed member of the Wellesley Scoops/Styx Family.
