About Wellesley Scoops
In our area, field hockey is not offered until 7th or 8th grade. During the summer of 2014, a few moms decided to start an introduction to field hockey known as Wellesley Scoops Field Hockey Club. We did not know anything about starting a local sports program let alone anything about providing field hockey instruction to youth girls. However, we have some dedicated and passionate moms who helped make Wellesley Scoops what it is today.
USA Field Hockey has been instrumental to our start-up. They've provided unlimited support, including equipment grants and the FUNdamentals curriculum.
So we have players, equipment and curriculum to introduce and teach field hockey...
Our remaining significant hurdle is where to hold practice each week. Fortunately, Wellesley is home to 3 beautiful academic institutions: Babson College, Dana Hall School and Wellesley College. Wellesley College immediately responded to our request for a meeting and a partnership began.
Wellesley College’s Varsity Field Hockey program agreed to provide turf field space and coaching (their assistant varsity coach and student athletes) and we would provide donation back to the college and their program. Similarly, Dana Hall School, an all girls independent private school, has provided us with their field space when Wellesley’s field was not available.
In the Fall of 2014, 40 1st and 2nd grade girls in the town of Wellesley, MA signed up to learn how to play field hockey. Since then, we've grown to offer field hockey in both the fall (full season) and the spring (4-week season). We have players from Wellesley, Newton, Needham, Dover, Weston and other areas. We look forward to continue to grow the sport of field hockey and support other local towns and clubs.
To date, Wellesley Scoops has introduced the sport of field hockey to over 800 girls.
The popularity of this sport and program spread quickly through word of mouth. Local parents have also been so supportive. They have helped get us organized, volunteer for snacks, team coordinators and helped provide our registration details to the Wellesley Public Schools community notice website. Without the support of our parents, our players would not have this really great opportunity.
Wellesley Scoops philosophy is to introduce the sport of field hockey through teaching fundamental skills focusing on player safety, quality instruction while having fun and building player confidence. We are a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization registered in Massachusetts. We provide support to local area programs primarily supporting the development and growth of youth girls playing field hockey.
